Does anyone know if there is a standard identifier differentiating ICD9 from ICD10 beside the date of service. The client whom I am working for asked me this question in context from the perspective from their data warehouse agent.
Any direction would be most helpful, as I have already researched CMS website.
Thanks
Linda

On the claim form there is an ICD indicator field. It is a one character field located within field 21( the diagnosis field) some electronic vendors labe this field with a v the paper version labels this the ICD ind. field. If the claim contains ICD-9 CM codes you use a 9 in this field, if the claim contains ICD-10 CM codes you use a 0.
