Hello!

I have a patient who has been in the hospital and will stay until she delivers at 34 weeks, but could be sooner. Does this break the global package?

Thank you so much!

In general, you would bill the global code when you have at least 7 prenatal visits, which she would not have had at that point. However, this can vary depending on payer and organizational rules.

Also keep track of all inpatient care as you may be able to bill most of it for the duration - up to 24 hours prior to delivery as she was admitted for a complication. Your documentation should be meticulous and you might not get paid for routine rounding visits in any case if the number of antepartum visits in the outpatient setting has been low. You want to concentrate on the visits that are directly related to the management of the complication to get the best shot at billing both the global package and the additional inpatient visits.
