Hi. I have a question if anyone could give me some pointers. I have a case that reads Robo Umbilical hernia with incarcerated properitoneal fat. I can't decide if this means the hernia itself is incarcerated or not. I have read that the viscera is contained in the hernia making it incarcerated. Viscera is abdominal organs. Now I am way confused.
My codes are 49652 vs. 49653

Thanks in advance!

My understanding is that it is coded as incarcerated if it is not externally manually reducible. That would be whether it contains bowel, or fat, or any other body part. My providers don't frequently perform hernia repair, but when they do, I often have to query them.
