Our doctors typically do an x-ray when the patient comes in for their follow up visit after arthrodesis and we use Z98.1. We have started to see an increase in denials from various insurance companies. Has anyone else seen this? If so, how are you getting these x-rays paid?

Yes we have as well. In fact, I try not to use any Z codes as the first coding diagnosis.

i would code the diagnosis first then the Z code as this is not an Encounter for Code
