Independent Interpretation: If my urologist orders the patient to go for a CT scan (at an independent imaging facility) and then reviews the images and interprets them, can they get credit towards the MDM for their independent interpretation? Some say no because my doc ordered it, but others say yes they can be credited since they did not bill for it or take credit for ordering it. My doc believes the work involved in reveiwing the films (billed by the radiologist) should count. Thoughts?

Hi there, according to a March 1 update to the E/M guidelines:
If the physician ordered a test performed an independent interpretation of the results as defined in the E/M guidelines, they can get credit for the order and the independent interpretation. Here's the update: www.ama-assn.org/system/files/2023-cpt-corrections-errata.pdf
There was no change to the guidelines for order and review of test results - the physician can only get credit for one.
There was never an "unless someone else billed the test" exception.
