Hi,

Patient was jaundiced (R17) had elevated counts (R74.0). Patient had an ERCP and cultures showed E. coli B96.29

Coding instructions say you can't code the B96.29 first... Sequence the disease first... How do I figure out what that is??

Thank you.

Phyllis

The short answer is you can't - it's the provider's job to figure out what that is and document it for you. Coders aren't trained to interpret lab results and wouldn't be correct to code until the provider has interpreted it and documented the diagnosis. If that hasn't been done, then your only choice is to code the symptoms that you have or else query the provider for additional information or clarification.
