I am confused by the Excludes 1 note for J09, excluding Influenza A/H1N1, but J09.X includes Influenza A/H5N1. If the physician diagnoses Influenza A would it be coded in J09.X or in J10?

Influenza A J10 dx Code vs dx J09 Differ types

Hello

There are different types of Influenza. This is the reason for Exclude notations listed in the ICD10 manual. Per your physician 's documentation does the patient have Influenza A, B or Aviran(bird) or swine flu J09 vs. J10 dx. codes. These diagnosis codes are different. Also if the patient has Influenza A add the corresponding B95 dx code if lab test confirms it. But this lab result must be listed on documentation for the day.

Good luck!

If the doctor does a rapid flu test, what is the correct diagnosis code if it shows only strain A or B without any further specificity?
