We were recently advised that informed consents needed risks and benefits added or it could affect insurance claim payments. I thought this was a liability insurance requirement not an insurance claim requirement. I have been unable to find any information addressing this. Does anyone have information.

Yes, informed consent is not an insurance claim requirement. I suppose someone could say if there are no risks/benefits documented as discussed, then you have a surgery with no risk, so it's lower on the MDM risk table than surgery with risk.
I will say it's poor patient care and a liability issue, but not really a coding concern.
