I have just transitioned from long term care SNF to the acute hospital setting and I am really green. I am working with observation accounts and have just been informed that it is ok to charge an initial code for each date of service of the observation stay as opposed to only once an encounter. Is this correct?

Thanks.

I would disagree. the initial code should only be charged once per encounter, unless two IV sites and medication was administered via each.

Thank you, that was my understanding as well but I was informed that the rules had changed as of 1/2012. As I said I am really new to this but I did not see in the coding manual or CCI manual where this info had changed.
