Hello,

Can anyone tell me if a physician goes to do an injection in a thumb joint and was unable to place the needle in the IP joint, the injection was aborted.

Can I code for the attempted injection?

Thank you,

Yes you can. You would bill the procedure with a Modifier 53 - Discontinued Procedure. I would send the claim on paper with the procedure note.

Some insurances will pay and reduce the contracted rate depending on how far the physician was into the procedure and the documentation.
