If my gastroenterologist sees a patient that is admitted in the hospital on 11/7 and then admitted again on 11/25, can we bill an initial consultation (99221-99223) for the two different admissions as long as the key components are met?
 
You should be able to, from a pro-fee perspective. However, re-admission in such a short time often requires the inpatient service to be considered a single admission. This is a payer decision, however. I'd go ahead and bill them both out, but if you get a denial, it's because the payer considered them both as being during the same admission. Then the second one would need to be billed out on a corrected claim as a subsequent visit. Hope this helps. Pam
