Inpatient telehealth/PHE - time or MDM rule?

For inpatient services, consult/initial visit, during the PHE, can we determine the LOS by time or MDM, or is this only for office/outpatient? Confused on what guidance is the most up to date at this point. We have a new ID consultant performing telehealth inpatient visits. Quite a difference in leveling between HPI/Exam/MDM and time/MDM rule. Authoritative guidance would be very helpful.

Hi there,

The new time/MDM distinction only applies to codes 99202-99215. For other E/M visits you'll follow the traditional guidelines. The PHE didn't change underlying documentation/coding guidelines and requirements for services rendered via teleheatlh.
