Do a lot of you find your physicians using the axillary artery to place an intra-aortic balloon pump? If so, what code are you using for this?

thank you!

Not the common route

Did some quick research, and this is what I found: 33967(the axillary is not one of the common routes for access), 36215(axillary and Subclavian arteries are still considered non-selective). Depending on radiology use 75600 and/or 77001. Hope this helps.

Axillary IABP

Hi Lisi,

We use the unlisted cardiac code (33999), using an average of CPT 33970+33987 RVU's for pricing comparison. Our surgeons do this via open incision with attachment of a chimney graft to the axillary artery prior to inserting the IABP. For removal we also use the unlisted and compare to 33971. Hope that helps!
