Does an interventional cardiologist need a referral from an EP to bill a new patient visit?

I would say it depends on whether the patient's insurance requires a referral.

If they don't and the EP and interventional cardiologist are not in the same group with the same taxonomy code, then you should be able to bill a new patient E&M.

No referral is usually required since the PCP probably already received authorization for all Cardiology Services. EP wold fall under that.

Depending on the scope of practice, I would be careful billing a NP E&M code however.
