I'm sure I've asked this question before so sorry for asking again, but I am confused. when given an infusion of meds when would we use the code 96368? I am not really understanding when it cpt book says concurent, when/how would I know if it is concurent? thanks to everyone in advanced...alice
 
Concurrent - 96368

Hi:

CPT 96368 is used as "concurrent" which means while another infusion (IV or pump) (considered primary as described in the CPT book: 96365, 96366, 96413, 96415, 96416) is occuring at the same time.

EXAMPLE SCENARIO: Pt. was ordered and received CTX (5FU 500mg-J9190) infused for 2 hrs and the last hour of infusion the pt. was ordered and received Leucovorin (J0640) 50 mg IV Infusion for a total infusion time of 2hrs 15 mins. You would code the admin. for 5FU-96413/96415 (primary) and Leucovorin-96368 (concurrent). Leucovorin was running (dripping) concurrently with the primary admin (drug: J9190-96413/96415).

As a reminder, The CPT reads that this code should be reported once per encounter. Hope this information helps. If you have a scenario that you would like guidance on, please post.

concurrent is: 2 or 3 medication infusions running simultaneously thru same access site. A Central line,is one example, where all medications could run same time, same access site.
 
Clarificiation on concurrent IV infusion

We need some clarification on concurrent IV infusion. Does concurrent mean exact start and stop time for both medications OR a majority of the time running together. Here is an example:

Medication number 1 runs 12:05 to 1:15
Medication number 2 runs 12:10 to 1:20

Would this be coded as 96365 and 96368 or 96365 and 96367?

We appreciate any help as soon as possible. Thank you.
 
concurrent infusion must run through same access site at same time, if 2 medicines given through 2 different accesss site at same time, then 2 initial infusion codes are given with appropriate modifier.
