I am wondering what other kinds of medical office jobs other than coding, auditing, claims denial work or compliance would qualify toward the removal of one’s apprenticeship status. In my case, one job I had was to attach correspondence and documents to patient accounts. For things like authorization letters, I would often have to look through a patient’s encounters to match up the ICD or CPT codes on the letter to figure out which account the document should be attached to. After a couple years, I became a Patient Account Specialist focusing on posting provider-level PLBs, recoups, refunds and other adjustments. For this, my daily work involved posting adjustments to specific CPT and HCPCS codes on invoices.

Would either of those roles qualify for the removal of my A?

If not, I would love any suggestions on what role I could work towards which would qualify. Maybe regulatory audits? Insurance follow-up? I have tried to get into coding with my company but they are a very large organization which outsources its coding work. All my efforts to find a way in or even a mentor have hit a brick wall. Thus, I am looking into alternatives which would use my coding training, even indirectly.

Per AAPC https://www.aapc.com/certification/apprentice_status.aspx:

Requirements for Removal of Apprentice Designation

To remove your apprentice designation via on-the-job experience, you must obtain and submit two letters of recommendation verifying at least two years of on-the-job experience (externships accepted) using the CPT®, ICD-9-CM/ICD-10-CM, or HCPCS Level II code sets. One letter must be on letterhead from your employer*, the other may be from a co-worker. Experience includes time coding for a previous employer and prior to certification. Both letters are required to be signed and will need to outline your coding experience and amount of time in that capacity. Download our Apprentice Removal Template for easier submission. Letterhead and signatures are still required when using this template.

Hi, yes, I am aware of the requirements. I am just trying to figure out how much exposure/work with the code sets is enough to qualify. “Using” the code sets, as stated in the requirements, just sounds rather vague to me.

There is definitely some grey area there. I think asking AAPC directly would serve you best. The employer letter needs to outline what your responsibilities were. AAPC states it should outline specifically coding experience and amount of time doing that work. I assume AAPC will review that to determine if it meets requirements. For me personally, if your first position was simply matching the letter to the code and you didn't need any understanding of what those codes meant, I would not think that counts. Your second position, if you were writing appeal denials explaining why a CPT or ICD code was correct, that should count. If you are simply posting a payment to a CPT (again not needing to understand what any of the codes meant), I would not think that counts. But since AAPC is making the call, it doesn't really matter what my opinion on the matter is. :)
