I believe it's not shorthand, it's a state abbreviation. A Michigan based company? Trying to get Credentialed with a Payor for a laboratory is arduous and time consuming because most of them are already contracted with the bigger entities such as Labcorp and Quest. Deferring the claims to hold when panels are closed to newbie lab facilities is usually not an option. For Medicare, yes, but for Medicare Advantage OON and Commercial payors it's almost impossible. And labs are sometimes put on their own specific application if they are freestanding.
