Does a laceration repair require an E/M visit?

Depends... was there another reason why the patient was in the office besides the laceration repair?

If this was done in an office setting and it has a global period (the repair) I would bill 9921- with a 57 modifer if no other condition was treated that day.

If there was another condition evaluated that day in the office, I would use 9921- with a 24 modifier and reference the other condition as the dx for the office visit.

If this was in the hospital setting, this gets a bit tricky..Usually if your doc is NOT the attending on admission, I would bill subsequent care (9923-)w/ a 57.

If this was outpatient, again, depending whether or not your doc was the attending.. I would bill either 99218-57 or 99224-99226 w/ 57.

If there was no global period on the laceration repair, I would try to bill the E/M w/ a 25 modifier.
