Latent autoimmune diabetes (LADA) managed as Type 1 diabetes, well documented hyperglycemia over 8.0. I am unable to determine the best code to use to put the query forward. The discussion amongst our group resulted in several suggestions - Put forward E13.65 Other specified diabetes mellitus with hyperglycemia, E10.65 Type 1 diabetes mellitus with hyperglycemia and/or E11.65 Type 2 diabetes mellitus with hyperglycemia to give the provider the option to choose. Is anyone able to offer guidance for appropriate coding for LADA, managed as Type 1 with hyperglycemia?
 
I am not in inpatient coder but curious. It seems E13.65 (Coding Clinic third quarter 2018 supports this code for LADA with hyperglycemia) with Z79.4. would be sufficient to report the diagnoses if the physician's statement of "managed as type 1" means managed with longterm insulin. Am I missing something? I would not think that a code for type 1 diabetes would be assigned for "managed as,' but am curious whether there is guidance that I am unaware of.
