Can code 11008 prosthetic device or mesh removal(add on code) be billed with 49654 Hernia repair/reducible. I beleive 11008 is an addon code to 10180 and 11004-11006. Wouoldnt one of these codes have to be billed in order to bill 11008 and if they are removing Mesh, wouldnt that indicate that this is a recurrent Hernia repair 49656? Also, if it is a re-current hernia repair isnt the mesh removal included in the suregry?

Thanks Jesse

HI Cynthia,

Thank yu for your response I appreciate your help. In regards to my initila question can you bill add on code 11008 with 49654. If billing 11008, doesnt that indicate a recurrent curgery (49656)? also wouldnt you have to bill codes 10180 and 11004-11006 first befoe billing 11008. I guess what im assking is can 11008 be an add on code to 49654?

Thanks for your help...

No it cannot be reported the way you are asking.
11008 is used when an post operative infection is present (10180) or there is a necrotizing soft tissue infection (11004-11008). If the documentation does not support an infection as the reason for the mesh removal then the medical necessity for billing the codes does not exist.
