I recently ran in to an issue where one of our clients is now receiving bills for there regular quarterly lipid testing for use of long term psychiatric drug therapy. On the lab order they marked 80061 for the lipid panel with diagnosis codes Z79.899 and a supporting diagnosis code of F33.3. Does anyone know why this is being denied? I am new to behavior health but I am told that this is standard procedure for patients that take certain long term psychiatric medications. I have checked the Medicare allowable codes for this test and the Z79.899 is an acceptable code for this test however, no psychiatric codes were listed. Is it appropriate to continue to add a supporting diagnosis of the actual reason that the patient is on long term drug therapy? Has anyone else seen this issue?
