The ICD-9 codes for mal-union and non-union (733.81 - 733.82) state
"fracture." Can these be used for a non-union or mal-union of an osteotomy? If not, what would be the best way to code this condition?
Thanks to anyone who can help out.

Mal-union and non-union

I would absolutely go with the codes you listed for mal-union and non-union by virtue of the fact that the osteotomy is an intentional "fracturing" "breaking" "severing" of a bone(s) to accomplish the outcome desired. Unfortunately, bones don't always behave the way we expect and heal nicely - sometimes they just don't cooperate.

Have a good one :)

Thanks Auntjoyce!! I was leaning that way, but just needed a bit of confirmation that the osteotomy would be considered a fracture. I appreciate your time and help.
