Good afternoon! Does anyone have some good reliable resources regarding when to bill massage therapy vs manual therapy? Our chiropractor has a massage therapist that works with him, and we have been having some issues regarding when it is appropriate to bill the manual therapy code 97140 instead of the massage therapy code 97124.

I have tried searching for some articles, but either I can't find anything, or the ones I find aren't very clear.

Any help would be appreciated! Thanks in advance!

I would check with your Massage therapy Board. Usually a massage therapist is not licensed to perform manual therapy. I know that in WA State only PT/OT and Chiros are licensed to perform manual therapy.

The manual therapy code is a several therapeutic codes in one. It includes manual therapy, joint mobilizations, myofascial release and manual traction.
