How maternal obesity s/b coded? Is it 649.1x or 646.1x?
Most of the time there is no evidence of obesity in pt's records befor the pregnancy but she gets obese during her pregnancy. I think that 649.1 is covering pt's who were obese befor the pregnancy....
Can someone explaine it to me?

I believe that the 649.1X is due to the obesity prior to pregnancy and the 646.1x would be the exessive weight gain during pregnancy. You can always ask the physcian if possible to clarify. Hope this helps :)
 
I think the same as you and use 649.1_ (with 278.00 or 278.01) for pt's who were obese before becoming pregnant. 646.1_ is for excessive weight gain DURING pregnancy.
