We are having issues with a couple of claims at my business. They involve passengers in car accidents that were not injured, but the parents wanted to follow up for peace of mind. Would you choose these as V codes or something else? Are there codes for car accidents with non injured persons? Any help would be appreciated! Thanks - Debbie CPC-A

V codes? That's ICD-9, do you mean Z codes?

There's a code Z04.1 - Encounter for examination and observation following transport accident - which would be appropriate for a medical evaluation following a car accident when no symptom is reported and/or injury is diagnosed. You can use the external cause codes as additional codes to report the specifics of the accident to the payer, if documented.

Making note of the car accident, another option would be to bill the auto insurance directly for this service. Was this a third party liability accident? Meaning, was the other car at fault? If so, you can bill their auto insurance. You can easily obtain a copy of the police report if available. I would start with seeking that info and deciding whether or not it is appropriate to bill auto insurance before billing primary health insurance. Even so, with that said, you will use the same codes. As mentioned above, billing using code z04.1, - Encounter for examination and observation following transport accident - would be appropriate here.
