A Hospitalist is seeing a patient to clear him/her for spinal surgery and was asked to do a Pre-Operative Medical Risk Assessment (POMRA) which is mostly about a cardiovascular exam. Would the physician code with the V72.81 Pre-operative cardiovascular examination (Pre-procedural cardiovascular examination) or the V72.83 Other specified pre-operative examination (Other pre-procedural examination)? The physician is doing a cardiovacular exam however, it isnt for a cardiovascular surgery. So do you base you V code on the type of exam or the type of surgery the exam is for? Because I was told the V code goes first and then the code for the issue that the surgery is based on and then any other issues that has been found. (In this case V72.8X, 724.2, 401.1)
