 I have been searching and searching for guidance relating to the MDM for Psychiatry. The MDM that works for all other specialties doesn't really fit for Psychiatry. Example: New problem w/ work-up?? Yes, it's possible that there could be work-up but for the physician's that I work for it doesn't apply in most circumstances. We are having trouble trying to capture the HIGH MDM on initial inpatient services in a voluntary admission setting. Most of the problems are new. Most do not have a traditional work-up.(labs, ct, x-ray etc) The risk is usually high. I'm looking for any information on what constitutes "work-up" for psychiatry. Any advice on where to find an audit tool or coding cheat sheet about anything related to Psych would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Do your providers review any labs done in the ED? any other records? Not sure what you mean by "voluntary" admission but would the risk really be high? High risk would not always equal high MDM.
