Hello,

If a patient comes in for Osteoarthritis of the hand and the doctor examines the hand and then examines the cervical region can you count the cervical region when determining the E/M Code?

Thank you,
LLR

Well, as long as it was done for a specific reason and consistent with the chief complaint/presenting problem. The physician cannot do random unnecessary exam components just to bring up the level. I guess the short of what I'm trying to say is it must be medically necessary otherwise it doesn't count.
