One of our orthopedic surgeons is requesting our hospitalists to medically manage his surgical patients, and I want to train them on the proper code selection. Please correct me if I'm wrong:

FIRST SCENARIO: Patient has diabetes, hypertension, anemia, etc. = a “daily hospital visit” (not a consult), because it's not a request for their opinion but for them to “manage” the patient, putting aside the ‘billing' rules for consults depending upon the patient's insurance.

SECOND SCENARIO: Patient has no real medical issues other than a complaint of knee pain prior to knee replacement surgery = a “non-billable service” because it's not really medically necessary.

Thank you!
Debbie
