Need information on this please! We have a provider who is licensed with the state to participate in the Medical Marijuana Program. They are evaluating patients to see if they are candidates for the use medical marijuana. Is so, the provider will issue the patient a certificate to obtain the marijuana. How would these evaluation visits be coded? Will they fall under an E/M? What primary diagnosis would you use? Thanks!!
 
The diagnosis would be the condition the patient is being seen for. They wouldn't be seeking a "prescription" for Medical marijuana if they didn't have a medical condition they are seeking the prescription for. Its billable as E&M if you can meet the 3 of 3 components (or 2 of 3 if established patient) just like any other medical condition they would be evaluated for (and prescribed medication to treat)
