We have a dietician who will be billing out services. I am not familiar with the MNT codes 97802, 97803 and G0270, G0271, and S9470. The 978 codes are billed per 15 min. Do you code the CPT and add units to additional time? I read that there needs to be a referral from a phycisian for every visit to the MNT is that correct? Also are there any other things I need to be aware of?

Thank you for your help!

I can't be more helpful because I don't know what sort of practice setting the dietician will be practicing in.

Read the code descriptions, 97802 and 97803 are billed in 15 minute increments, and 97802 is for new visits, and 97803 are for returns.

We always asked our physicians to provide a referral or documentation in his notes when referring patients for MNT.

Keep in mind if you are seeing medicare patients, and the reasons are not for one of the four or so approved diagnosis, you will need an ABN in place.
