Is there a code used to bill the patient for medical records? I have never known of a code to bill for medical records but I wanted to be sure

I think this was answered under another thread, but basically you just make up a code since billing for medical records does not go to an insurance payer.
 
Copying medical records for a patient is not something that you would typicaly bill to an insurance company for reimbursement, but that being said, there are actually a couple of HCPCS Level II S codes you could use for these types of services. They are S9981 and S9982. Code S9981 is for medical record copying fees for administrative and S9982 is for medical records copying fees per page.

I have never used these codes, so I can't speak to their acceptance or reimbursement by commercial payers, but Medicare does not recognize them.
