Our Sugery Center had been open since 2003. Medical Records AREA is full, cannot hold any more records. QUESTION- Can I shred all 2003 , or do I have to buy a scanner to scan them then shred ?

Each state has their own laws for how long you must keep medical records. I'm not sure who you need to contact...the information may be online. Or your state's Insurance Commisioner's office can help. We had to rent a storage facility to keep the amount of records that no longer fit in our office.

AMA also recommends checking the statute of limitations on malpractice lawsuits for your state, keeping immunizations indefinitely and sending notification to patients who may request a copy.
