We are being told that we are not able to use T14.91 suicide attempt as a payable mental health code and need to use a dsm code. Does any one know of an F code that can be used for this dx code. Thanks
this would depend on if the patient had an underlying condition that caused the suicide attempt. Did a MH professional diagnose the patient with a depressive disorder or Bipolar? If so I would code that first. If there are other psychotic symptoms then you would have to use a higher specificity code when coding the bipolar or depressive disorder. I would then code the suicide attempt last.
Is there an update on this? Many providers bill the suicide attempt as the prime dx; but I believe the prime dx should be what caused the suicide attempt: depression, mania etc.
