A self-pay patient (actually one of my front office staff) called a physician's office and was quoted a specific cost for a procedure. The patient went in for the procedure, paid 1/2 of the quoted cost at the time of service and signed a payment plan agreement to pay the remaining 1/2 of the cost over 6 months. One week later the patient received a call from the physician's office saying they had bad news. They had misquoted the cost and it should have been $500 more and they wanted to amend the payment plan agreement to include that $500.

I have never had that happen in my office, but if it did we would just eat the cost of our mistake since we did not correct the information prior to the patient receiving the service. The patient may well have decided to go elsewhere or forego the procedure entirely if she had been aware of the true cost.

Has anyone else heard of this type of situation? What is the law on this?
