A provider prescribed antibiotics at the same time he did an I&D for an abscess. 2 days into the 10 day global period the pt returned because she was having a reaction to the antibiotic so he changed the meds. Would this visit be considered a post-op complication or treatment related to the underlying disease?

Thanks

Modifier 24

I would consider this UNRELATED to the surgery, and would use the -24 modifier on the E/M code. ONLY the documentation related to the drug reaction would be used in determining the level. (So, if documentation ALSO include examining the surgical site, do NOT include that.)

Diagnosis will be rash, etc - i.e. the adverse effect of medication

Hope that helps.
