Wiki Modifier for repeat procedures at the same session

Hello,

I understand that the 76 modifier cannot be used when the repeat procedures were done at the same session.

Which modifier would be used? For example, two nebulizer treatments.

(For more than 1 inhalation treatment performed on the same date, append modifier 76)

(For continuous inhalation treatment of 1 hour or more, see 94644, 94645)

Typically there is a physician assessment in between each treatment so technically each is performed in a separate session.

Do you know where I can find official guidelines that state the "same session" rule?

The definition in your CPT book for modifier 76 states what you need to know. The definition is as follows:

It may be necessary to indicate that a procedure or service was repeated by the same physician or other qualified health care professional subsequent to the origianl procedure or service. This circumstance may be reported by adding modifier 76 to the repeated procedure or service.

The word subsequent in the definition does not have to be a different day, it just has to be after the origianl procedure. I hope this helps, have a great day.

If you were to try to look up definition of subsequent session its extremely vague and does not specify a minimum time
