One began the multiple procedures surgery and then left. The other completed the remaining procedures. The first surgeon will be the one providing post-op care.

Is 54 the only modifier I will need for the second surgeon's charges?

Thanks in advance.

Did Dr#2 do a more intense procedure on the patient? If so, mod 66 can be billed as well. It all depends on the wording in the Operative. If both doctors worked together at first, then you would bill the 80 or 82 with the 54.

Hope this helps!

Maybe -62 modifier

Depending on the documentation ... if both surgeons worked together on the first procedure(s) you might be using a -62 modifier on that portion.

If they were truly doing separate procedures, but in one operative session ... e.g. Doc A repaired a fractured hip; Doc B worked on the hand ... Then you are correct, Doc B (who will NOT be providing any post-op care) would use the -54 modifier.

Best to post the op notes to get a really definite answer, though.
