Hello,

We are having a debate at the office.

If the provider orders a 4 view cervical x-ray and a cervical MRI - would this be considered low (2 unique tests - 1 for the x-ray, 1 for the MRI). Would this be considered moderate (5 unique tests - 4 multiple view x-ray, 1 for the MRI).

Myself and others believe it is the 2 unique tests as we would code it as the 72050 and 72141 but we have a couple that think it should count as moderate due to him order 4 views.

Does anyone have information for imaging when ordering these tests? Mostly for multiple images.

Any help is appreciated!

You are correct this is 2 tests. The tests are counted by the way they are coded.

From the AMA 2021 guidelines:
Test: Tests are imaging, laboratory, psychometric, or physiologic data. A clinical laboratory panel (eg, basic metabolic panel [80047]) is a single test. The differentiation between single or multiple unique tests is defined in accordance with the CPT code set. For the purposes of data reviewed and analyzed, pulse oximetry is not a test.
