We're having ongoing discussions at work if a patient who goes into the N1 stage can be coded as a 95819 (awake & asleep) EEG. We cannot find any reputable resources on the internet to say if this can be CODED this way, there are a many websites that list the stages of sleep that include N1. And there are many websites that say it is not actually sleep, but the precursor to sleep.
AAN and AASM don't seem to address this issue for Coding purposes. Our providers don't agree on this issue, some say N1 is drowsy but not asleep and so should be coded to 95816. Stage N2 seems to be where all of our providers will then document the patient fell asleep.
Have any of you ever asked the AMA about this issue? If so, are you willing to share their response? We've used up our AMA questions for the year so can't ask this one.
Anyone else dealing with this issue? I'd like to know we're not alone in trying to figure this out
(Just to clear up any misunderstanding - I am not talking about a sleep-deprived study, but one where the documentation says the patient only went into stage N1.)
