Hypothermia Billing
Does anyone bill for neonatal hypothermia (99481 and 99482)? Can you share your fee schedule with me? These codes just became billable on 1/1/14; Medicare has not determined a fee yet, nor have any carriers added them to their reimbursement schedules. Any guidance regarding formulating fees is greatly appreciated!

99481: Total body systemic hypothermia in a critically ill neonate per day (List separately in addition to code for primary procedure)
Notes:
(Use 99481 in conjunction with 99291, 99292, 99468, 99469)

99482: Selective head hypothermia in a critically ill neonate per day (List separately in addition to code for primary procedure)
Notes:
(Use 99482 in conjunction with 99291, 99292, 99468, 99469)

(Services by the professional during either cooling approach include radiographic confirmation of core temperature probe, assessment of continuous amplitude EEG monitoring, and interpretation of cooling-related laboratory evaluations)

(Do not report 99481, 99482 in conjunction with 99221, 99222, 99223, 99231, 99232, 99233, 99477, 99478, 99479, 99480)

Since there is not a fee per CMS, I would ask the doctor how much time was spent,
And then maybe bill $500/hour.??? It may take a few claims to get a real idea
Of what the reimbursements will be, but if you get paid 100% of your billed charge! then
You are not billing enough. If you only get 25%, then you billed too much.
