I have a doctor that documented in his assessment
Neuropathy / leg cramps
I'm being challenged by my choice of coding. Would you consider this to be 355.8 or 356.9

Thanks

356.9 is unspecified hereditary or idiopathic neuropathy. To clarify, I'm told this should be coded as 355.8 because it doesnt specify bilateral leg pain, therefore the assumption is mononeuritis. However, I chose 356.9 due to unspecified peripheral neuropathy.

Is there more to the documentation? I do jot see a dx of mononeuritis from this nor do i get peripheral neuritis, idiopathic or hereditary. I get leg cramps which has a specific code.

It's my understanding that documentation of neuropathy is coded as 356.9 unless more information is available, that is per the Healthcare business monthly magazine article in the August issue.
