Wiki New Coder

Hi Cassandra

I am a certified professional coder-hospital since 2014 I worked in some outsourcing company through my learning center in back home(India) than I came USA, I tried to get a opportunity as medical coder here but I didn't..than I did CCA from ahima in 2018, I tried for CRC in 2019 but due to some reason I couldn't attend my exam..I am still searching everyday coding jobs, a lot of opportunities out but not for new coders every company wants high experience..now I am doing CIC course and still in hope to get something soon.

Cassandra, keep in mind that everyone has a different experience when it comes to getting their first job. I have known many CPC-A's to get a job right away, and others struggle. Most try to find a job in the medical field where they can prove themselves and be moved into coding later. Don't be discouraged if an add for a coder states that they need an experienced coder. There are certain coding situations that are in volatile clinics with strong willed physicians and this is not the place to start a new coder. Trust me, you would not want to enter a situation like this where you have a physician breathing down your neck asking you a difficult question that you don't have an answer to. Keep trying and something will happen for you.

Hi I was lucky i was able to get in at a billing company after completeing billing and coding classes. I then spent couple years at a pathology lab in billing. I am in a small primary care group practice now. I got my cpc Dec of 2019 . Next week I start a job remote. Happy dance . It does seem there are a lot of jobs but they tend to want experience. Good luck.

Best of luck bud,
I got my CPC December 2019 and have been applying to jobs ever since. Not a single interview. Try to reach out to facilities listed on ProjectXtern. I received one response through there saying all the medical coders are teleworking due to the pandemic, so they are not taking interns. Others have told me to get into a medical office as a receptionist and climb that way.

Hope you have better luck then me.

Hello all,

Hope everyone is well! I recently earned my CPC certificate in June and I am currently enrolled in the CIC course. Has anyone had difficulty finding work as an Apprentice?

Thank you for the time and feedback.

Hi Ms. Cassandra and congratulations on passing your exam! I just passed mine this week. There are some companies that are willing to hire new coders. Usually the listing with state "coding specialist" or "coding associate". I've noticed a few postings that have asked for billing or denial experience instead of direct coding. Some will even give you a chance in the auditing or compliance department. The insurance companies like Anthem, Humana and United Healthcare have those positions quite often. Hope this helps!
