I recently started coding hospital surgeries that our Ob/GYN perform. I need some help with a case I am trying to code. If we do an induction of labor for fetal demise at 18 weeks, is that considered a delivery or do we just bill for a visit? Also, the next day she had to have a D&C for retained products of conception. Can someone please help me with coding this case?:confused:

I would use (59821 w/dx code 632) and then I would bill out the D & C (59160w/dx code 667.10, 667.12, or 667.14). Of course, these codes depends on the specificity of the note.

If induction of 18 wk fetal demise was accomplished using prostaglandin such as cytotec with/without laminaria I would look at code 59855 or 59856 which also includes a D&C.
 
Thank you both for the replies. I'm still torn on this. The 59856 would be good if it was all done on the same day. Now I'm wondering if I should use an E/M code for the first day and 59820 on the second day.
