Hello,

I work for an orthopaedic office in Georgia and have a question in regards to how to scheduled a visit correctly, if a patient is seen in our office by one of our orthopaedic surgeon and recommend surgery and then scheduled to see one of our other doctors for a medical clearance who speciality is General Medicine, would this be scheduled as a NP or Est. patient.

Thank you in advance,

According to New Patient definition under E/M guidelines in the CPT codebook. "A new patient is one who has not received any professional services from the physician/qualified health care professional or another physician/ qualified health care professional of the exact same specialty and subspecialty who belongs to the same group practice, within the past three years".
Since General Medicine and Orthopaedic surgery belong to different specialties, the patient is considered a New Patient.
I look forward to opinions from other members.
