If we have a edit set up that all new patients codes picked by the provider are to be checked to make sure they are truly new since we bill as a group. As a certified coder can we change the coder to the appropriate est level or does this need to go back to the provider? Where can I find documentation about this?

Same if the coder adds a modifier by working edits where can I find information about this?

Thank you

As a certified coder you are qualified to correct the coding based on documentation, including adding modifiers as needed. I think your question should be answered by the provider and/or practice manager.

HTH :)

Agree with TWinsor. This is a question of organization policy.

I worked for a provider group that insisted on each provider reviewing and approving all proposed E/M code changes...even though all of our coders were certified. That was the policy until we were able to get it rescinded after proving the providers rarely, if ever, disputed our code choices :)
