We had a new patient come into the office for a physical. The doctor spent time counseling after the physical and would like to bill a modified visit. Everything is documented to support this my question is can we bill for both being a new patient and would we use two new patient codes?

Thanks for any help.

If time is documented and it was preventive why not use a code from 99401-99404 in addition to you physical?

The time counselling was not preventative. It was counselling regarding ADD and behavior problems.

Check with your payer.

I don't feel as if both codes should be "new" but it varies and you will get differing opinions ... as with most subjects in coding :)
