Wiki Newbie question: assist at surgery

I apologize if this is a stupid question. I code for a practice where the MD performs surgery with our PA assisting. Am I submitting TWO claims for each surgery; one for the MD and another for the PA using modifier AS/80? I'm confused because, with the exception of Medicare and UHC, our payers have indicated that PA claims should be submitted under the supervising MD's NPI. I'd appreciate any direction someone can give me.

I work for an Orthopedic practice as well & yes you will submit 2 claims. One for the surgeon & one for the assist (PA). On the assist you would use the modifier AS & all lines will get split in half.

Thank you! When submitting for the PA, is the modifier enough to keep the claim from rejecting or being denied as duplicate?

Sure no problem- Yes the modifier AS will be enough so they know that the claim isn't a duplicate. It should go out under the PA's name anyways.
