Hi all:

Is it mandatory to code V30.01 as primary diagnosis for newborn delivered by caesarian section having also respiratory distress syndrome? The baby kept in NICU for one week to treat respiratory condition. Can we code 769 as principal diagnosis in this case ?

Please advise.

Thanking you

V30.01 should be the principal diagnosis and Respiratory distress syndrome can be the additional one. (ICD 9 CM official guidelines "Use of codes V30-V39:
When coding the birth of an infant, assign a code from categories V30-V39, according to the type of birth. A code from this series is assigned as a principal diagnosis, and assigned only once to a newborn at the time of birth"
