The doctor I work for did allergy testing on a patient who presented for allergy testing simply because his siblings had allergies. The patient has absolutely no symptoms or complaints just wanted to see if they were allergic to anything. The allergy tests were all negative (he doesn't have any allergies). I Don't know what DX code to use. The two that I came up with can't be used as primary DX codes (v19.6, V72.7)
Anybody have any suggestions??
Thanks!

Family history of allergies should work...you may have to appeal by asking if the carrier would have preferred for their insured to have a severe reaction requiring hospitalization, or pay for this testing to Know their insured is healthy...

allergy testing

Hi,

Yes. Ofcourse we cannot use v72.7 , v19.6 as primary codes.

But as per ICD-9-CM guidelines given in Routine and administrative examination(13 chapter), V72 category series may be used if no signs, symptoms, associated diagnosis and also history codes can be used as additional diagnosis.

My suggestion is you can use both V72.7, V19.6. Anyway you can clarify your provider what code can be used.
